Gogo Wang (毕业典礼上Pettit女士关于作者的演讲)
Astudent is to admire the wisdom of her teacher. But in my situation,
it was I who admired the wisdom of my student. Tonight I am honored to
recognize a young woman who I look up to for a couple of reasons.
When I think of Gogo Wang, I think of joy. Whether wearing a man’
s suit and a mustache to impersonate a character from a play, creating
a school newspaper, or planning her roller skating birthday party, Gogo
radiates joy.
After packaging meals for “ Meals from the Heartland,” some of the
seniors came back to my house for lunch. A group of girls was sitting
in my dining room. I happened to be joining them. I am not sure if my
presence caused a lull in the conversation, but Gogo was ready to liven
up the party. She said, Let ’s create a funny story together by going
around the table. These girls and my eight year old had fun creating a
non-sensible story that got everyone smiling and laughing. This is typical
of the air surrounding Gogo- the air of joy.
Gogo possesses something else that I admire, and that is being a great
thinker. I enjoyed taking Gogo to the bus stop this winter. After I had
wrapped up my time at ICA, I headed to Grand View and Gogo headed to Central
Academy. We had many nice conversations during these short drives, but
one in particular stays with me. While we were studying poetry, she too
was studying poetry at Central. A poem that she read at both schools was
William Carlos Williams ’ The Red Wheelbarrow. It goes like this:
So much depends
Upon
A red wheel
Barrow
Glazed with rain
Water
Beside the white
Chickens
Now, to be honest, it is one of those poems that is put in just about
every literature anthology, and it never has made much sense to me. Unlike
her teacher who could not make much sense out of it, except that it contained
strong imagery, Gogo had a strong interpretation. She said, “ It is of
course about the disappointment people feel when faced with reality.”
Hmm. Sounded good. I think I’ll use her interpretation next year with
the juniors.
